The Evolution of a Landmark
1913

1913 – 1922: Early Beginnings
The Cannery stands on the historic grounds of the Rosebery Estate, once envisioned as a pioneering model for industrial craft. In 1913, the Rosella Preserving and Manufacturing Company transformed these halls into a hub of activity, marking the start of the site’s storied history as a center for local makers.

1925

1925 – 1926: Purpose-Built Construction
Designed by the prestigious firm Ross and Rowe, our iconic warehouse was commissioned in 1925 to house the expanding vision of the Rosella company. By early 1926, the factory doors were open and operations were in “full swing.” As the state’s primary production hub, the precinct became synonymous with the production of soups and sauces for over half a century.

1963

1963 – Late 80's: Transitional Era
Following the acquisition of Rosella by Unilever in 1963, the precinct entered a transformative chapter. In 1967, the landmark was purchased by The Smith Family, who repurposed the expansive warehouse as their charitable headquarters for over two decades. By the late 1980s, the site returned to its industrial roots, serving as a hub for Aristocrat Leisure and the celebrated industrial auctioneers, Geoff K. Gray Pty Ltd.

TODAY: The Cannery
Today, the site is unified as The Cannery, a premier lifestyle destination where industrial heritage meets contemporary soul. The precinct offers an unparalleled offering – from acclaimed culinary experiences and artisan spirits to boutique retail, holistic health, and professional workspaces – all thriving within the storied walls of our 100-year-old landmark.
